DEER HEARTS FOR SCIENCE SMARTS

Our guys never passed up the opportunity to have Wes come to school for show and tell; mostly because their Dad had a really cool job and was willing to get right to the “heart” of the matter when he came in on Career Day to talk to the students about his job. Being a medical sales consultant in the cardiac field made him a sought-after show-and-tell dad, especially since he was also a hunter and always brought a deer heart with him for the science class. He graduated with a major in biology from Hobart College and his presentation was always attention grabbing and totally engaging.

Of course, there were the normal number of kids in the class who would gasp, turn away and sometimes throw up when Wes did his demonstration but overall, the students were enthralled. Wes would keep a deer heart from his hunting success in the fall and then freeze it for his presentation later in the year. (You wouldn’t believe the kinds of things we had in our freezer over the years!)

After dissecting the heart and explaining the different chambers, arteries, veins and valves, he would pull out his demonstration pacemakers and leads to help the students understand how the job he did could assist cardiac surgeons in saving lives. It was such a source of pride for his boys.

The classes had their fair share of doctors, lawyers, firefighters, accountants, vets, bankers, and other business people from the community, but as far as we know, Wes was the only one with a heart! A real heart. A hold-it-in-your-hand heart! A daddy heart too; it was a pleasure and a privilege for him to be involved in his boys’ educations and just the fact that he cared enough to take the time meant the world to our sons. We know that for a fact. We are convinced that it’s the parents who stay involved in their kids’ lives and in their kids’ educations that have children who are well-adjusted and excel in their studies. When we showed our guys that education was valuable and it was important to strive to do well in school, our children picked up on that.

So the next time you happen to have an extra heart laying around, take it in to science class and see how it pumps everybody up. Deer hearts for science smarts; you just can’t beat it
